about

In 1969/1970 my grandparents built a store on the South End of Camano Island called Tyee Grocery. A more in depth history of the Snowden family on Camano is available on the Sunnyshore Studios blog at: sunnyshorestudio.com/2021/08/08/discover-beautiful-camano-the-snowden-family/

Tyee Grocery Store

It was the longest drive,
from the edge of town to the South End
In my Dad’s Brown Ford,
to my Grandparent’s store

Shared seatbelt, we were buckled in,
my Little brother and I, strapped together again
He’d keep pickin’ fights,
Until mama pulled out the Jolly Ranchers - for him

I remember when we’d arrive,
we were always greeted so well
A few siamese cats and 2 Dobies
Raisin’ 12 kinds of hell

Grandma gave us candy and ice cream,
then she’d cut us loose outside
We went crawlin through culverts,
junked cars and other well diggin’ supplies

At Tyee Grocery Store
Tow trucks, Tall Tales and More
It was a place I adored but I miss most what was inside…
I miss them

Grandpa Ted wore flannel, suspenders and jeans
Grandma Ellen always covered, in dirt and grease
Grandpa tellin tall tales, he had a new one every time it seemed

Ohh grandma did the towin’ and grandpa dug the wells
They did so many things NOT on the sign
They barely worked themselves a living,
but they often gave away their time

You didn’t go just for the gasoline,
or for the junkyard parts they’d sell
You went there for the guarantee
that you’d come away with a story to tell

And those Tyee folks lived a life worth remembering

Now cruising down that East Camano Road,
Back out to grandma and grandpa’s store
There aren’t no cars in the pond no more
And all those snacks now -- they tried to charge me for!

At Tyee Grocery Store
Tow trucks, Tall Tales and (much) More
It was a place I adored but I miss most what was inside…
At Tyee Grocery Store (play, but don’t sing next line)
It was a place I adored but I miss most what was inside…
I miss them

about

Daniel Snowden Seattle, Washington

Following his extensive prenatal exposure to 60s Rock’n’Roll, Daniel was born a poet in his pre-verbal head before learning language. His young, compulsive love for writing and poetry found their way into music at age 17. Daniel’s songs find meaningful balance between fallin’ down and gettin’ back up; tying soul-filled melody together with poetic imagery in hopes of capturing the unexpected. ... more
